Have you ever found yourself staring at a decision and whispering, “Lord, what do I do next?” Maybe it is a job change, a move to a new city, a relationship that feels uncertain, or a new ministry opportunity here at Alicia Alliance Church. You want to honor God, but your heart feels caught between options, questions, and what-ifs. You are moving, but you are not always sure if you are moving in the right direction.

In those in-between moments, it is easy to wonder if you have somehow slipped outside of God’s plan, or if you have missed the one path He had for you. But the good news of Scripture is this: God is not a distant observer of your life. He is a faithful Shepherd who walks with you, directs you, and delights in every step you take with Him.

Anchored in God’s Word: Psalm 37:23

Psalm 37:23 (NKJV) tells us, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.” This short verse is packed with encouragement for anyone who is trying to walk with God in everyday life, whether you are just beginning to discover who Christ is or you have been following Him for many years.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord” means that God is not simply watching your journey; He is directing it. He is the One who sees the whole path when you can only see one or two steps ahead. At Alicia Alliance Church, our Disciple-Making Journey (Discover, Mature, Journey) is built on this reality: God Himself leads His people, one step at a time, from the Cross to the Commission.

And then the psalm adds, “And He delights in his way.” God does not merely tolerate your progress. He takes joy in it. As you follow Jesus — our Savior, Sanctifier, Healer, and Coming King — God delights to see your faith grow, your character shaped, and your obedience lived out in your family, your workplace, and your community.

Four Truths to Steady Your Steps

As we begin this “Keep Moving With Holy Purpose” series, we want to draw out four key truths from Psalm 37:23 that can guide you in this season of your journey with God.

1. God Guides Your Steps

When the psalmist says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord,” he is reminding us that God is sovereign over every step — even the uncertain ones. The word “ordered” speaks of arrangement, appointment, and purpose. Your life is not random. Your story is not left to chance, your emotions, or the opinions of others.

For the follower of Christ, every step becomes part of a larger journey of discipleship. God uses open doors and closed doors, smooth paths and rocky ground, to shape you into the likeness of Jesus. When you are not sure what is next, you can still be sure of who is leading. The Lord who saved you at the Cross is the same Lord who sends you out on mission. He orders the steps that lead you from discovering Him, to maturing in Him, to journeying with Him into your community and beyond.

2. Walk in Obedience

Psalm 37 speaks of the “good man,” not in the sense of someone who is perfect, but someone whose life is surrendered to God. Our part is not to be flawless; our part is to be faithful. Obedience in the small, daily steps matters deeply to God.

Walking in obedience might mean choosing integrity at work when it would be easier to cut corners. It might mean serving in a ministry here at Alicia Alliance Church, even when your schedule feels full, because you sense God inviting you to invest in others. It might mean forgiving someone, starting a regular habit of prayer and Scripture reading, or joining a small group to grow together in Christ.

God does not ask you to have every detail figured out. He asks you to take the next faithful step. In His grace, through the power of the Holy Spirit, He sanctifies you as you walk — setting you apart, shaping your desires, and enabling you to live out your faith in real, practical ways.

3. Trust His Purpose

There will be seasons when the path ahead seems unclear. Plans fall through. Prayers seem unanswered. You may feel like you are standing still while others move forward. In those moments, Psalm 37:23 calls you to trust that God’s purpose is still at work, even when you cannot see it.

From the Cross to the Commission, God is weaving your story into His larger mission. He uses delays to deepen your dependence on Him. He uses detours to place you where your life and witness can make the most impact. He uses disappointment to draw you closer to Christ, who understands suffering and walks with you through it.

4. He Holds You Up

Psalm 37 does not ignore the reality that we stumble. The very next verse says, “Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand” (Psalm 37:24, NKJV). Following Christ does not mean you will never trip, make mistakes, or feel weak. It means that when you do, you are not abandoned.

The Lord who orders your steps is the same Lord who lifts you when you fall. When sin, failure, or discouragement knock you down, His hand is still on your life. In Christ, there is forgiveness for the past, strength for the present, and hope for the future. As your Healer, He restores what is broken. As your Coming King, He assures you that the story is not over yet.

So even if you have taken a wrong step, you do not have to stay there. Confess it, turn back to Him, and let Him set you on solid ground again. He upholds you not because you are strong, but because He is faithful.

A Word for the Weary Walker

If you feel stuck, tired, or lost today, hear this: God is not finished with you. He has not forgotten you, and you have not walked beyond the reach of His grace. Every step, even the slow and painful ones, matters to Him.

Maybe you are weary from serving, parenting, studying, or caring for someone who is struggling. Maybe you are wrestling with doubt or disappointment. Maybe you are just trying to put one foot in front of the other. In all of this, the Lord is still ordering your steps. Commit Your Next Step to Him

As we close this first part of the “Keep Moving With Holy Purpose” series, we invite you to pause and bring your next step before the Lord. You may not know all that lies ahead, but you can entrust your way to the One who orders your steps and delights in your journey.

Whatever that next step is, offer it to Him in faith. Let this simple prayer be your starting point:

Lord, thank You that my steps are ordered by You. I confess that I do not always see the path clearly, but I choose to trust that You are leading me. Show me the next step You are calling me to take. Give me a heart that obeys, a faith that endures, and a courage that keeps moving with holy purpose. Uphold me when I stumble, and use my life for Your glory and for the good of others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
